A STUDY OF BED BUGS FINDS THEY ARE ATTRACTED TO CERTAIN COLORS

So you a planning a trip away from your home in Las Vegas – you might want to pack in brightly colored luggage to keep the bed bugs at bay. A new study finds that bedbugs -- just like flies and other insects -- have favorite colors. They really like dark red and black, and they avoid white, yellow and bright shades of green.

In the study researchers put bedbugs in Petri dishes that contained little bug-sized tents made of different colored paper. The bugs quickly crawled to the shelter, just as you would expect of bed bugs since they spend 90% of their lives hiding in cracks and crevices. But when given the chance, they gravitate toward the tents that were black and red and avoided the white, yellow or green shelters.

As you know from previous blogs- a common way to get bedbugs is when you stay at a hotel that has an infestation, and the insects or a few of their eggs hitch a ride home with you on your bag, Sunny-colored suitcases could help prevent that, although bedbugs might still be able to find dark folds in the fabric in which to stow away.

Hard exterior suitcases are much better to keep bed bugs away than soft canvas cases, It is also advise to store your suitcases in your garage and pack and unpack without bring them into your home. This way they do not come into contact with your bed or any upholstered furniture - these are places bed bugs like to hide in.

The study showed that the dark color preference was true for bedbugs across the board, whether male or female, well-fed or hungry.
