THE FIVE HARDY CHARACTERISTICS OF COCKROACHES

We find cockroaches in every part of the world including the Las Vegas Valley. From Henderson to Summerlin they creep and crawl into our homes.

Cockroaches have been around for hundreds of thousands of years and have evolved into one of the most adaptable bugs on Earth. They display tactics of survival that aide them in existing in almost any environment.

The National Pest Management Association (NPMA) comprised a list of the characteristics that make cockroaches so hard to control.

Resilience – A cockroach can hold its breath for forty minutes and can live for a week without its head. Some species of cockroaches can exist in freezing temperatures.

Small Size – They can hide in cracks and crevices since they are small. Male cockroaches can fit into an opening the thickness of a quarter.

Quick Speed – Cockroaches are extremely fast – they can run up to three miles an hour. Even baby cockroaches can run as fast as its parents.

Irregular Feeding Habits – Cockroaches can live for up to one month without food and go without water for two weeks. They eat many types of food including sugars, protein and fats.

Rapid Breeding – Female cockroaches and their offspring can produce around 30,000 cockroaches per year.

The NPMA warns that cockroaches can pose a health risk – they spread disease, trigger allergies and asthma. They also are extremely hard to eliminate.
