WINTER SEASON PESTS THAT CAN INVADE YOUR HOME

Some pests go into hibernation during the winter months and others will seek shelter in homes around the Las Vegas Valley. Whether you live in Summerlin or Henderson you should take precautions against common winter pests – mice, rats, spiders and cockroaches.

The following is a guide from The National Pest Management Association to prevent any infestation over the next couple of months.

MICE: The house mouse is the pest most encountered rodent in the United States. They usually nest in secluded, dark areas like basements or attics. They can contaminate food and spread diseases like Salmonella and tapeworms.

Tips to keep mice out of your home – seal cracks and holes on the outside of your home with caulk and steel wool. Store boxes off the ground so mice cannot hide in them, and regularly look for signs of mice – droppings and gnaw marks.

NORWAY RATS: Like the house mouse, Norway rats nest in basements and piles of debris. They will gnaw through almost anything – even plastic or lead pipes. They carry diseases like rat-bite fever, cowpox virus and jaundice.

Tips to keep Norway rats out of your home- seal any cracks on the outside of your home and eliminate moisture in crawl spaces and basements. Regularly check inside your home for signs of infestation.

GERMAN COCKROACHES: German Cockroaches are the most common of the species in the world. They gravitate to areas near food and moisture like the kitchen or bathroom. They usually enter the home in grocery bags or boxes. German cockroaches carry bacteria and contaminate food and are known to trigger allergies and asthma symptoms.

Tips to avoid German cockroaches – keep counters and floors clean and free of crumbs. Vacuum and take out garbage regularly. Inspect under sinks.

BROWN RECLUSE SPIDERS: Brown recluse spiders like to hide in undisturbed places – closets, crawl spaces, attics and basements. This type of spider can bite and inject venom – making them dangerous.

Tips to avoid the brown recluse spider – trim trees and shrubs so they are away from your home. This will help reduce spiders’ access to finding their way inside. If you suspect a spider bite, seek medical attention.
