CENTIPEDES IN LAS VEGAS

Centipedes have an evolutionary lineage dating back more than 400 million years and share ancestral roots with lobsters, shrimp and crayfish. In Las Vegas and other parts of the arid Southwest the centipede - like the scorpion, tarantula, rattlesnake and coyote is an icon.

Most centipedes are not poisonous and do not cause damage to homes.  In fact infestations of these pests are usually due to the presence of other insects that they like to feed on.  These pests also like dark moist areas – outside they can be found in moist areas in the yard – the underside of stones, leaves and barks of trees.  When inside your home the areas centipedes and millipedes are most likely to hide are bathrooms, kitchens, garages and basements.

Centipede means “100 legs” which is not always the case.  They can have anywhere from 15 to 177 pairs of legs.  Centipedes are elongated with flat segmented bodies – each segment of the body has a pair of legs.  They also come in several colors – most common are reddish orange and brown.  Most centipedes are carnivorous – they forage for food at night – feeding on worms, spiders and soft-bodied insects. They are born with only eight legs – as they get older they molt and can grow up to thirty legs and typically one to two inches in length.

The most common type of centipede that infests homes is aptly called the “house centipede”.  They originated in the Mediterranean and have spread to the United States and other regions of the world.
