BARK SCORPIION IN LAS VEGAS

The Las Vegas Valley is home to a couple of types of scorpions- the Arizona bark scorpion is a venomous pest so be careful if you have an encounter with one. The bark scorpion isn't native to our valley arriving on palm trees and other desert landscaping.

Desert landscaping is a favorable hiding spot for these pests since the bark scorpion is light brown in color and makes it easy for them to camouflage themselves. These scorpions can range in size from 1 to 3 inches.  Scorpions usually are in hiding during the day when there is direct sun light and the height of the heat – common hiding spots are palm trees, under rocks, wood piles, cracks and crevices in brick walls and finding their way into a home.  They feed at night.

Scorpions are arthropods and they have eight legs, two pedipalps, and a tail with a venom-injecting barb. Scorpions have two venom glands that produce venom used in hunting and self defense. A scorpion sting is painful - swelling will most likely occur along with numbness and tingling at the site of the sting.  You can bring down the swelling with ice and hydrocortisone or an antihistamine can relive itching and swelling. Please note the vast majority of scorpions cannot harm humans with their venom however the bark scorpion is the main problem pest because their stings can be deadly if not treated.

All scorpions have a tendency to become fluorescent under ultraviolet lights, such as blacklights. A bark scorpion can appear to glow with a color similar to fluorescent green color at night, an oddity that is often used to detect these nocturnal predators.

If you do find an infestation of scorpions you should call a licensed professional pest management company to evaluate and treat the problem.
