THE BOXELDER BUG IN LAS VEGAS

The boxelder bugs are more of a nuisance than harmful to the population of Las Vegas.  If you have a boxelder tree then you most likely have boxelder bugs. This pest has a very distinct look – it has a black and red body.

They are found usually in large numbers during the fall and spring seasons in North America–  found on boxelder trees as well as ash and maple other trees.  When the weather starts turning cooler the boxelder will try to find shelter inside the home by trying to enter through cracks and crevices in the walls.

Homeowners become aware of the boxelder in the fall as they congregate in large groups on the south sides of trees, homes and rocks to get exposure to the sun.  The adult boxelder bugs will frequently attempt to enter a home in an attempt to secure a protected, over-wintering site.

Boxelder bugs are usually harmless to humans, pets and your homes structure - they do not transmit disease or sting.  Their feces can leave a stain on light colored surfaces and if smashed release an unpleasant odor.  They are not know for biting but will defend themselves if feeling threatened.

To help keep boxelder bugs or any other pests from finding a spot in your home - inspect your home for any cracks or crevices and fill them in where needed. Also if you have screen doors or windows that have a tear in them repair those as well.
