MOSQUITOES WITH WEST NILE DISEASE FOUND IN LAS VEGAS AREA

It is that time of year again in Las Vegas – monsoon season and the Southern Nevada Health District announced that mosquitoes tested positive for West Nile virus in eight area ZIP codes.

The zip codes that are affected with infected mosquitoes are 89011, 89012, 89027, 89107, 89123, 89128, 89134 and 89146. The Health District, however, has not received any reports of human cases of West Nile virus in Clark County this year.

Mosquitoes tend to gather at sources of standing water such as in birdbaths, flowerpots, grill covers and baby pools. Try to eliminate any standing water especially after a heavy rain.   It is advised to screen all windows and doors, repairing even the smallest holes that could serve as entry points for pests.

Mosquitoes pick up West Nile from birds and spread it to humans when they bite. It can’t be spread person to person. Symptoms can include fever, headache, body aches, nausea, vomiting, swollen lymph glands or a rash on the chest, stomach and back.

Dr. Joe Iser, the county’s chief health officer stated “We encourage our residents to ‘fight the bite’ by using insect repellents, wearing protective clothing and limiting their outdoor activity at dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active.”
