A PEST CALLED THE BOXELDER

The boxelder bug is a very distinctive looking bug with a black and red body. They are more of a nuisance than harmful to the population of Las Vegas whether you live in Summerlin or Henderson. If you have a boxelder tree then you most likely have boxelder bugs.

They can be found in large numbers in the spring and fall in North America– usually found on boxelder trees as well as ash and maple other trees. During cold weather times they will try to seek shelter in your home by trying to enter through cracks and crevices in the walls.

During the fall season this species congregates in large numbers on the south side of trees, buildings, and rocks exposed to the sun. It is at this time homeowners become aware of these insects. Adult boxelder bugs will frequently attempt to enter in an attempt to secure a protected, over-wintering site.

Boxelder bugs are usually harmless to humans, pets and your homes structure - they do not transmit disease or sting. Their feces can leave a stain on light colored surfaces and if smashed release an unpleasant odor. They are not know for biting but will defend themselves if feeling threatened.

To help keep boxelder bugs or any other pests out of your home inspect your home for any cracks or crevices and fill them in where needed. Also repairing any screen on doors or windows is a good idea.
