ATTENTION LAS VEGAS – HOW TO TREAT BEE STINGS
The summer is soon coming to the Las Vegas Valley and from Mountain’s Edge to Centennial bees will be buzzing and stinging.
Stings from bees, wasps and yellow jackets, honey bees and bumble bees are painful. You will immediately feel a sharp burning pain followed by a red welt at the sting site. Most people will see the swelling and pain go away within a few hours, however as many as 10 percent will have a stronger reaction that takes several days to get resolved.
In rare cases around 3 percent of people will have an allergic reaction known as anaphylaxis that can be life threatening and requires immediate medical treatment. Symptoms include generalized itching, rashes and hives, tightness or swelling of the throat, nausea or vomiting as well as dizziness.
If you have been stung it is important to remove the stinger as soon as possible otherwise the sting site could get infected. Clean the area with soap and water and if needed use an over the counter nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug and an antihistamine ointment.
