DUST MITES IN LAS VEGAS HOMES

Dust mites come in two varieties – the American dust mite and the European dust mite and can be found living in most homes across the country.  Both of these dust mites are the most important group of pests that produce allergens in the house dust of your home. The dust mite is nearly impossible to see without magnification. A typical mattress can contain tens of thousands of dust mites.  Plus nearly 100,000 mites can live in a single square yard of carpet!

The allergens from the dust mites are actually found in the feces of the mites and when they mix with the air can cause rhinitis. asthma or atopic dermatitis.  Dust mites feed on human and pet dander as well on mold, fungal spores, pollen grains and feathers.  You will find their presence most dense in your mattress and overstuffed frequently used furniture.

The complete elimination of dust mites is close to impossible even for the most attentive housekeeper.  However the reduction of these pests can be achieved through added measures besides vacuuming and many common household cleaners.  It has been found that the following steps can help reduce dust mites and their allergens:

  • Encase your mattress, boxspring and pillows in zippered, dust and allergen proof covers.
  • All bedding including sheets, blankets, pillow covers and mattress pad should be washed in hot water every two weeks.
  • Carpet is a favorite place for dust mites – you might consider removing carpet from your bedroom and put down hard wood.
  • Make sure your heating vents are covered with HEPA filters.
  • Use shades on windows instead of curtains.

If dust mites are a real problem in your home, call a pest management professional.
