EARWIGS – AN ANNOYING PEST IN LAS VEGAS

Earwigs are among the most readily recognized insect pests in home gardens and can damage annual flowers. Many people will agree that earwigs are the more frightening or even loathsome looking insects that can be found and can be quite brazen when they seek shelter in a home.

The earwig can enter a home through very small cervices or cracks that are so small they are easily not noticed when you inspect your home to seal up any cracks.  They prefer dark damp places and can live inside the walls were they breed and come out to scavenge for food.

The most common earwig is the European earwig, Forficula auricularia, which was accidentally introduced into North America from Europe in the early 1900s.  They are chestnut in color and have segmented antennae, and muscular, banded abdomen making them pretty frightening looking.  Their most alarming aspect, however, is the set of evil-looking pincers that they carry as a tail.

They get into everything inside the home – furniture, laundry, clothing, bedding and any household food they can find.  Earwigs have not been associated with the spread of any disease and are non-venomous.

The lifespan of an earwig is about one year.  Their mating season is early fall and can each produce 30-55 eggs causing an infestation in the home.  If you encounter earwigs the best ways to get rid of them is sweep or vacuum them up.  If they persist identify the cracks in your walls and seal them up.
