HOW DO MOSQUITOES CHOOSE THE PEOPLE THEY BITE?

Have you taken a hike in the mountains that surround the Las Vegas Valley with some friends and come back with several mosquito bites and the other people were not bitten? Well you’re not alone. Scientists estimate around 20 percent of the population, whether you live in Southern Highlands or Seven Hills, are especially attractive to mosquitoes and get bit more often.

Blood type, metabolism, exercise and the color of your clothes are all factors in why certain people are more delicious to the mosquito.

People with certain blood types are more prone to mosquito bites – one study in a controlled setting found that people with Type O blood were nearly twice as attractive to mosquitoes than those with Type A. Type B fell in the middle of the group tested. They also found that about 85 percent of the people tested secrete a chemical sign through the skin that indicates what blood type they have.

Mosquitoes can also smell the carbon dioxide we emit when we breathe out – so people that exhale more frequently attract mosquitoes. We also emit Lactic acid. Uric acid, ammonia and other substances when we sweat, and strenuous exercise increases the buildup of lactic acid and body temperature making us easier prey for mosquitoes.

Clothing colors that stand out – red, black or dark blue may make you easier to find according to entomologist James Day from the University of Florida.

Some researchers are trying to create natural insect repellants by studying the people that rarely attract mosquitoes. This advanced bug spray eventually could be of aide to ward off mosquitoes for good.
