HOW TO IDENTIFY THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF COCKROACHES IN LAS VEGAS

Spring and summer are the bug seasons in the Las Vegas Valley as well as across the country. One of the biggest pests is the cockroach – and Las Vegas is home to many varieties.

There are around 70 species of cockroaches in the United States – however there are only a few that we come in contact with. The most common are the American cockroach, Brownbanded cockroach, German cockroach and the Oriental cockroach.

Most cockroaches are oval in shape, but they all have slightly different body colors, which is an effective way to tell them apart from one another. For example, American cockroaches are reddish-brown with a yellowish figure-8 pattern on the back of their heads, while brown-banded cockroaches are brown with pronounced banding across the wings. German cockroaches have light brown or tan bodies with two dark stripes. Oriental roaches are shiny black.

The smallest of the common roaches is the Brownbanded at only ½ inch in length. The German cockroach is a little larger and the Oriental cockroach measures around one inch in size. American cockroaches are the largest you will encounter if you have an infestation - they can grow to be about 2” in length.
