IT’S SCORPION SEASON IN THE LAS VEGAS VALLEY

Be careful- its scorpion season and they are crawling in all areas of the Las Vegas Valley from Summerlin to Henderson looking for food and water.

Las Vegas had a very mild winter this year – scorpions, as well as other pests, were able to multiply and are causing headaches for many homeowners. Scorpions prefer to hide in cool, dark areas such as the crevices beneath rocks during the day and are quite capable of using their stinger at any time.

A scorpion sting is painful - swelling will most likely occur along with numbness and tingling at the site of the sting. You can bring down the swelling with ice and hydrocortisone or an antihistamine can relive itching and swelling. Please note the vast majority of scorpions cannot harm humans with their venom however the bark scorpion is the main problem pest because their stings can be deadly if not treated. They are not native to the region – arriving here on palm trees and other desert landscaping.

Scorpions have a tendency to become fluorescent under ultraviolet lights, such as blacklights. Indeed, a tan or black scorpion can appear to glow with various bright colors under such lighting, even at night, an oddity that is often used to detect these nocturnal predators.

If you do find an infestation of scorpions you should call a licensed professional pest management company to evaluate and treat the problem.
