CENTIPEDES AND MILLIPEDES IN LAS VEGAS – THE MOST “UNWANTED LIST” PART 5

CENTIPEDES AND MILLIPEDES IN LAS VEGAS – THE MOST “UNWANTED LIST” PART 5

Centipedes and millipedes are the next classification of pests on THE MOST UNWANTED LIST. They are both found here in all areas of the Las Vegas Valley. Whether you live in Centennial Hills or Green Valley they can frighten you if you encounter them in your home.

Most centipedes and millipedes are not poisonous and do not cause damage to homes. In fact infestations of these pests are usually due to the presence of other insects that they like to feed on. Both of these pests also like dark moist areas – outside they can be found in moist areas in the yard – the underside of stones, leaves and barks of trees. When inside your home the areas centipedes and millipedes are most likely to hide are bathrooms, kitchens, garages and basements.

Centipede means “100 legs” which is not always the case. They can have anywhere from 15 to 177 pairs of legs. Centipedes are elongated with flat segmented bodies – each segment of the body has a pair of legs. They also come in several colors – most common are reddish orange and brown.

Most centipedes are carnivorous – they forage for food at night – feeding on worms, spiders and soft-bodied insects.

The most common type of centipede that infests homes is aptly called the “house centipede”. They originated in the Mediterranean and have spread to the United States and other regions of the world.

They are born with only eight legs – as they get older they molt and can grow up to thirty legs and typically one to two inches in length.

Other species of centipedes that can be found in homes may have anywhere from 30 to 382 legs. Most centipedes can live several years and rarely bite – if they do bite it is not poisonous but can cause sharp pain.

Millipedes have two pairs of legs per body segment and eat mostly decaying organic matter – roots of plants and leaves. They also like dark moist areas both inside and outside of the home.
