LAST WEEKEND A SWARM OF BEES WAS REPORTED IN LAS VEGAS

March and April is the beginning of bee swarm season in Las Vegas. From Southern Highlands to Summerlin bees move from place to place.

During their move the bees may rest or try to get out of the sun by hanging from tree branches, fences, sides of buildings or street signs. Bees that are swarming generally are not producing honey or caring for their young, so they are not considered to be harmful and are not usually exterminated- officials from Las Vegas Fire and Rescue stated.

Property owners should have them removed by professionals if the swarms of bees hang around for more than three days.

If bees are in a hive producing honey and laying eggs they will become aggressive and will sting if threatened. They build the hives in areas far away from loud noises and vibrations as these agitate the bees and it is best to leave them alone.

If a person encounters a hive and the bees are attacking – it is best to run quickly to shelter while covering your face to protect your nose, eyes and mouth. Officials say the best place for shelter is either in a building or a vehicle – do not jump into water since the bees will wait for you to come out.
