PREVENTION TIPS TO AVOID PESTS THAT MIGHT OVERWINTER IN YOUR HOME

It is starting to get cooler in the Las Vegas Valley and soon temperatures in Summerlin and Henderson will drop to the 40’s and 50’s. This is the time of year bugs and pests look for somewhere warm to overwinter like your home.

Pests such as rats, mice, stink bugs, cockroaches, Asian lady beetlesboxelder bugs and some spiders come indoors to find shelter to survive during winter months. These pests can be harmful to both people and homes.

If rodents make a nest in the walls they can chew on drywall or electrical wiring causing damage to your home. They also can carry diseases such as salmonella and Hantavirus.

Some spiders can be poisonous and cockroaches can contaminate stored food, leave droppings around the house and cause allergic asthma especially in children. The stink bugs are just nuisance pests. Asian lady beetles can aggravate asthma and cause allergic reactions. They also tend to exude a staining, yellow, foul-smelling fluid. Boxelder bugs fecal material can discolor fabric and they occasionally bite when handled, causing slight irritation.

The following are some tips to keep your home pest free during the winter.

  • Screen attic vents and openings to chimneys or any other areas in the home that may be open to the outdoors.
  • Keep basements, attics and crawl spaces well ventilated and dry. Pests are attracted to moist areas.
  • Seal cracks and crevices on the outside of the home using caulk and steel wool. Pay close attention to where utility pipes enter the home.
  • Keep kitchen counters clean, dispose of garbage regularly and store food in airtight containers.
  • Replace weather-stripping and repair loose mortar around the foundation and windows.
  • Store firewood at least 20 feet away from the house and also keep shrubbery well trimmed.
  • Install door sweeps and repair damaged screens.
  • Inspect any boxes or grocery bags that you bring into the home – even boxes you have stored in your garage.
  • Do not leave pet food dishes out for long periods of time.
