THE FALL SEASON IS SPIDER TIME

The Las Vegas Valley is home to many different types of spiders. Fall is the time of year they seem to come out of their hiding places and into your home.

Spiders are a diverse group of hugely abundant pests in the desert around Las Vegas. Spiders are recognized from other invertebrates by their eight legs, two body segments, and spinnerets (which produce the silken material they use to spin webs). Spiders do not have wings or antennae.

Spider control can be a major concern for homeowners - particularly for those who live in the southwest. There are about 3,000 species of spiders throughout North America, but only two in the southern and western United States can cause serious harm when accidentally disturbed - the black widow and brown recluse.

The brown recluse spider has 3 pairs of eyes - most spiders have 8 eyes and is light to dark brown with a darker brown violin-shaped spot on its abdomen. They like to dwell in woodpiles, debris, under furniture, and in dark places like closets, attics and crawlspaces. The brown recluse bite in defense – the bites are often painful and can produce an open, ulcerating sore that will require medical attention. Other symptoms include restlessness, fever and difficulty sleeping.

Black Widows are black and shiny with a red mark on their abdomen. They also like to reside in woodpiles, under eaves and in boxes. They like to weave their webs near ground level. The male of the species rarely bites but the female is known to be aggressive and does bite when provoked. Symptoms of a bite include fever, increased blood pressure, sweating and nausea. Seek medical attention in a timely manner – there hasn’t been a death in the United States from a black widow bite in more than a decade.

Other spiders in the Las Vegas area are not harmful to humans - common house spiders, jumping spiders, wolf spiders, and long-bodied cellar spiders to name a few.
