THE STINK BUG – ONE OF FALL’S PESTS

Las Vegas is beautiful in the fall and is also the season for certain pests – the stink bugs among them. From Henderson to Aliante the stink bug can put a damper on being outdoors.

The stink bug does not pose a health risk and doesn’t hurt property but this pest can be a nuisance because of the smell it emits. Simply handling the bug, injuring it, or attempting to move it can trigger it to release the odor. , Adult stink bugs feed on fruits, ornamental plants, weeds, soybeans and beans - nymphs feed on leaves, stems and fruit.

Originally from Asia in 1996, the stink bug earned its name from its tendency to release an odor when disturbed or when crushed. Many other insects have these same characteristics, including some species of ants, beetles and other bugs. The stink bug can now be found throughout most of the continental U.S.-partially due to its lack of natural predators. Easily identified by their mottled brownish color and distinct shield shape they get their name from the odor they release.

Stink bugs search for overwintering sites – like your home - in late fall to find shelter from the winter weather. They reemerge in early spring and become active. To avoid this pest or any others from invading your home here are some tips to keep them outside:

  • Seal any cracks and holes using a good quality silicone or silicone-latex caulk. Pay close attention to areas around siding and utility pipes and inspect screen doors and windows.
  • Stink bugs are attracted to lights, so keep outdoor lighting to a minimum or change to yellow bulbs.
  • Inspect any boxes or bags that you bring into the house - stink bugs can travel on these items and you do not want them to take up residence.
  • If you find any stink bugs use a vacuum cleaner carefully to remove them and discard the bag immediately.
  • Replace light bulbs to yellow lights outside the home as stink bugs are less attracted to yellow light. Sodium vapor lights are good as well.
